In the Summer of 2008, the Bay Area real estate community turned its competitiveness into public good. In partnership with MatchBridge and United Way of the Bay Area, the Real Estate 4 Tomorrow’s Adult program was developed and launched. As a result of the pilot, 25 San Francisco youth were provided with internship opportunities at Bay Area real estate firms. The jobseekers are pre-screened, and MatchBridge created a supplementary curriculum to prepare the interns specifically for the real estate sector. Workshops taught the youth about the industry as well as skills related to the workplace: data entry, money management, and the steps involved in purchasing property.

“It’s a great way for youth to get into businesses and really see what it’s like,” said Connie Moore, President & CEO, BRE Properties.
“When they get out of school they can say “I am ready to work” and they’ll be more valuable to any company they work for.”

The founder’s circle each gave $10,000 for the first year. The founder’s circle is made up of top real estate companies like Sunset Development Co., AMB Property Corp., UDR Inc., BRE Properties, Sares Regis, TMG Partners, Metlife Real Estate Investments, Webcor Builders, Grosvenor, and Navigant Consulting — who also pledged donations over the next five years to create educationally relevant internships that prepare youth for the 21st century workforce.
