News from our community partners and youth members:
Do you want to use art to create change in your community? Do you have a story to tell or a voice that needs to be heard? Are you a wordsmith, budding poet, writer, lyricist, screenwriter, photographer, digital artist or journalist? Do you want to get PAID to learn and create?
QUALIFICATIONS
1. You must be 14-17 years old and live OR go to school in SF’s Supervisorial District 11.
(neighborhoods in District 11 include:Excelsior, Ingleside, Oceanview, Merced Heights, Ingleside Heights, Mission Terrace, Outer Mission, Cayuga, and Crocker Amazon)
(schools in District 11 include: Balboa High School, CAT and June Jordan)
2. Available at least 6 hours a week to attend.
3. Ideal candidates are motivated, organized, community engaged and artistically inclined.

Literary Arts Apprenticeship
– Creating Change with Words
T & Th 4:00 pm-7:00 pm (12 weeks + 3 Saturday workshops)

We’ll introduce you to the many different ways writing can be used in the real world while exploring community health issues in the Excelsior and other Bay Area neighborhoods. You’ll develop your writing skills, go on field trips, interact with visiting writers, activists, musicians, and artists, and in the end we’ll create a publication full of your words. You’ll also get a chance to see and respond to the photography team’s in-progress work. At the end of twelve weeks, we’ll celebrate you with a public showcase of your work to friends, family and neighbors.

Digital Photography Apprenticeship
– Telling Stories the Eyes Can See
T & Th 4:00 pm-7:00 pm (12 weeks + 3 Saturday workshops)
You’ll learn all the skills you need to wield a digital SLR camera to tell the stories that are important to you and your community. Through field trips, guest speakers and site visits to professional settings, you’ll see how photography can be an essential tool for letting the world know about what’s going on. You’ll also get a chance to hear and respond to the literary team’s in-progress work. At the end of twelve weeks, we’ll celebrate you with a public showcase of your work to friends, family and neighbors.
